Overview of the Protect Citizens and Residents from Unlawful Raids and Detention Act (S. 3594)

Senate Bill 3594 was recently introduced by Senator Menedez (D.NJ). The bill purports to impose due process requirements on raid and detension activities undertaken by Immigration Customs and Enforcement. The bill comes in response to recent raids on various businesses where there was evidence of serious violations of human rights.

Congress Passes Extension of Religious Worker Legislation

The following is a legislative news posting to the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s website:

On 09/27/08, the House passed, by a voice vote, a bill to extend the Conrad 30 program (H.R. 5571) and the religious worker program (S. 3606) through March 6, 2009.

Both these bills were passed by the Senate on 09/26/08, and now head to the President for signature.

USCIS Announces Extension of TPS for El Salvadorans

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (”USCIS”) announced today that El Salvadoran nationals on Temporary Protected Status (”TPS”) will be able to extend their status an additional 18 months, through September 9, 2010. According to the USCIS memo announcing the extension, a 90 day re-registration period will open up on the date the extension notice is published in the Federal Register. Below we provide a link to the USCIS memorandum which provides information on who would qualify for the extension and an explanation regarding extension procedures, including how to apply for employment authorization:
